Valentine’s Day Fabric Heart

Happy Valentine’s Day! I have a special gift for you today. You might not think much of it but I spent a lot of hours doing it so, could you at least pretend you like it? (This is starting to seem more like a conversation with George than a post for this blog). Cuek.

Here is the deal, dear cyber friend, a long, long time ago I saw a photo on Pinterest that sparked my imagination.

Pinterest can be a wonderful place for inspiration, but it can also big a place for HUGE disappointment once you realize your life, home, and crafts look nothing like your Pinterest news feed, but I WON’T BE DISCOURAGED! And I will shout this until you believe me…

Well, looking for Valentine’s related crafts, I saw a heart made of fabric and thought to myself: “I have to do that for Valentine’s!!!” so I did. Little did I know that it was going to take twice the amount of time I expected originally.

After four hours of working on it I thought: “I am spending too much valuable time making this heart instead of watching The Vikings. Is this really worth it?” But then I realized I could watch The Vikings while making the heart and the whole endeavor didn’t seem like a super waste of time anymore, plus, I could soon see that the project was going to turn out very c-u-t-e! And it did.

I will pretend it is Valentine’s Day all year long so I don’t have to put this heart down ever! You will see.

Now, the moment you all have been waiting for, the detailed instructions of this art installation – this is how I am calling it because I like to be pretentious sometimes. (Warning: Max decided he wanted to pose for this post, so I let him do it. Prepare yourself for serious cuteness.)

3×3 ft Valentine’s Day Fabric Heart Art Installation

Difficulty (1-5): 1  Time: 6 hours  Cost: $80

Materials:

  • 20 ft Tulle fabric
  • 5 ft cotton fabric
  • 10 ft – 1in, 20 gauge chicken wire
  • Heavy-duty wire cutter
  • Scissors
  • Floral wire or another wire that is easy to manipulate.

1) Cut the chicken wire into a heart shape. You might need to make two halves depending on the heart size you want, as the chicken wire is not wide enough to accommodate a whole 3 ft wide heart shape.

2) Cut all your fabric pieces before you get started. This will make the project faster (Ford Model T, anyone?). The cotton pieces should be cut in triangles, so they are easy to tie down.

3) Start tying the fabric to the wire. I tied one piece of fabric per wire space. I also did one row of cotton and one of tulle. You need a big quantity of tulle for this heart to look organic and fuller, so I added the tulle on the rows that needed more fabric. The tulle is too transparent if you use it by itself. You need the cotton to fill in the translucent nature of the tulle.

4) Turn on a movie or play a podcast and BREATH! Finishing this project will take time but it will be worth it.

5) You want your last row to be made of tulle. Also, you can bend down any wires that stick out from the fabric, so you can’t see them in the final result.

6) Attach the two heart halves with floral wire.

There you go, my friends. I hope you have an excellent Valentine’s Day.

Today is a little sad for us because it used to be my father-in-law’s birthday and he passed away last year. Two days from now it is my dad’s birthday, who also passed away last year… very emotional week, indeed.

I hope you like this heart because I worked very hard to make you happy with it today.

Thanks for stopping by!

A Colorful DIY Pop-up Card For Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day Pop-Up Card

George and I are not into Valentine’s Day. This doesn’t mean that we are against love or romantic dinners (although we have been together for 15 years so love and romanticism are secondary to…you know…children),but going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day is a BIG NO, NO for us, because restaurants are horribly crowded, food is twice the normal price, and it is virtually impossible to make a reservation with less than two weeks of anticipation.

I am not one to advocate for cooking at home, but, in this case, I do! I can buy hundreds of oysters, lobsters, and pounds of Russian caviar for 1/4 of the price of A Valentine’s dinner… and this is only a slight exaggeration.

But, not wanting to eat out for Valentine’s dinner doesn’t mean I hate Valentine’s, on the contrary, Valentine’s Day is an EXCELLENT opportunity to do some crafts, hence, the colorful pop-up card I am showing you today in this post.

Ariel from the colorful DIY/design blog PMQ for two invited me to participate in a Valentine’s Day Card Blog Hop with other talented DIY bloggers. Here is what I came up with.

Colorful DIY pop-up card for Valentine’s Day

Difficulty (1-5): 3  Time: 1 hour  Cost: $10

Materials

  • Card stock paper – lots of different colors
  • Glue stick
  • Heart shape hole punches – different sizes. I had a 5/8 in. and a 1 7/16 in.
  • Small scissors

Instructions

1) Cut two papers to whatever card size you want. One (the interior one) slightly smaller than the one that goes on the outside, this will leave a “frame” around the interior card when you glue both cards together. Valentine's Day Pop-Up Card2) Create a lot of heart shapes with hole punches – Different sizes and colors. Valentine's Day Pop-Up Card3) Create the shapes you want to include inside your cards for the pop-ups, this will help you figure out which size your strips of paper for the pop-up need to be. I created these shapes with cards: 4) Cut the paper strips for the pop-up with small scissors. Make sure you have adjusted your height and depth right.

4) Glue your shapes to the front of the strips. Also, glue the interior and outside papers together.

5) Make cut-out letters of what you want to say and glue them to your card. I wrote “Happy Valentine’s Day” because OF COURSE!

3 Ideas For Your Valentine’s Tablescapes

Writing about Valentine’s tablescapes is not easy for me to do right now, but I will try.  I have been very stressed lately, so I will use this opportunity to disconnect and talk about Valentine’s Day, because love is the answer.

So, I wanted to come up with three table settings to inspire your Valentine’s dinner. My favorite thing about entertaining is finding creative ways of decorating the table. See here, here, and here. I enjoy doing that a lot more than cooking, as you can see. Here are some ideas for your romantic dinner – homemade or takeout-.

Let’s get started

Whimsical Tablescape

In my dictionary purple is whimsical, wouldn’t you agree? Here are 4 tips to get the Whimsical Tablescape look.

1) Get a colorful tablecloth – velvet preferably. I bought this dark purple velvet at a fabric store and then used it as tablecloth. It turned out pretty cute, fancy, and luxurious.  2) Get colorful dish plates. Good news is that Valentine’s dinner is usually for two people only (maybe?) so you can go a little fancy with your dish selection. 3) Get candles. Candles turn a normal dinner into a romantic one in seconds. Buy some colorful candles that match the rest of your table setting.
4) Colorful wine glasses. These pink wine glasses with the gold rim are so cute, aren’t they? I like how they look with the purple around them. We can NEVER have enough pink and purple in our lives!!!!

Boho Tablescape

I think this one is my favorite table setting because it is the most creative and eclectic. Here are four tips to get the look: 1) Use textiles as tablecloth. There is no end to all the textiles we can use for the table! This is a handmade textile I bought in Chile.2) Mix metallics. This copper flatware looks great next to the gold rim bowl and plate. The plate was a thrift store find that I also used here. 3) Choose a surprising napkin color. These teal napkins are a nice contrast to the red colors of the tablecloth and flowers. 4) Pay attention to the flowers. There is no need to spend a lot of money in flowers. Tulips are in season right now. The good thing about tulips is that they command attention and they come in a lot of different colors. I like how, in this table setting, they complement the red color but also add touches of yellow.

Rustic Tablescape

Here is to simplicity!

4 tips to get the Rustic table setting look: 1) Let the wood shine. Rustic is natural. Don’t use tablecloth if you have a wooden table, instead, use a runner like this one. Simple and cute.
2) Decorate with succulents. Grab any succulents in your home and use them as decorations for the table. Cheap and E-A-S-Y!

3) Forget about red. I decided to use blue napkins for this tablescape. The plates are a thrift store find. i love them so much. The cocktail shaker is from Anthropologie.
4) Add a neutral wine glass. This wine glass is precious. Neutral but elegant.
